about us

About Speed School

As Performance Coaches, we know first hand how impactful proper training can be for a developing athlete. It can make a below average player into a great player. We also know how damaging poor programming and bad coaching can be. It can cut an athlete’s feet out from under them and halt their rise to the top.

Unfortunately, that is an all too common reality for many athletes across the country. The best way to help an athlete is to have high quality coaches equipped with the knowledge to actually make a difference. This is why Speed School exists. There is a desperate need for Athlete Development Companies that focus on developing industry leading coaches who can deliver high-quality performance programs so athletes can excel in their sport and stay injury free.

Speed School was created to fill this void.

LTAD Framework

Every athlete is unique. An athlete’s age, physical maturity, training experience, sport and injury history will dictate what training program is most appropriate to achieve their goals. Our programs focus on making each athlete faster, stronger and more resilient to injury, and that means we need a system to deliver consistent and amazing results.

The Speed School Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) Framework allows us to accelerate athlete results in the safest and most time effective fashion possible.

This system helps us optimize training at specific stages of athletic development based on an athlete’s cognitive and physical development.

With our system, we do not focus on sport specific skills, instead, we employ a training model that focuses on improving general physical capacities that all athletes will need:

We also give special attention to developing a wide-range of movement patterns and coordinative skills like jumping, landing and throwing. This framework helps us achieve our singular goal of creating better and more resilient athletes, who can go on to excel in their chosen sport.

Our Coaches

Nick Gies, MProf, CSCS

Co-Founder & Director of Athlete Performance

With over 12 years working with hundreds of athletes ranging from 6 years old to the professional ranks, Coach Nick brings a wealth of experience to the athletes of Speed School.

Nicks passion lies in developing young athletes, as most of the attention and resources get given to professional or elite athletes.

He also has a keen interest in Injury Rehabilitation and bridging the gap between the physio table and return-to-performance, driven by his own experiences with career impacting injuries. His primary responsibilities involve developing Speed Schools programming systems, developing our performance coaches, running our internship program, and working with our rehabbing athletes.

Matt Howatt, BHPE, CSCS

Co-Founder & Head of Strength and Conditioning

As Head of S&C, he is in the trenches working with the majority of our athletes while also helping to develop our interns and coaches in a hands-on teaching environment.

This fostered his love for high-performance, leading him to obtain a Bachelor of Health and Physical Education. He has also developed a passion for youth athlete development, as he experienced first hand the impact strength training had on his athletic career. With his sporting background, Matt has a strong interest in hockey performance and runs both our on-ice and dryland training programs for individual athletes and entire teamsAs an athlete, Coach Matt won Provincial Gold and 4 straight league Championships playing hockey for the Okotoks Bisons.
